Gemini 4:4:4, a
revolutionary uncompressed video recorder/player |
Gemini enables videographers and cinematographers to capture at the
ultimate video quality, in a small, low-power, lightweight package,
at a very affordable price. Gemini features a built-in
high-brightness 5.0” 800x480 24-bit LCD touch-screen for monitor and
playback, and introduces an industry first - the ability to
simultaneously record to two removable solid-state drives - creating
instant backups; an invaluable insurance against lost footage, as
well as, opening new workflow options.
Gemini records 10-bit uncompressed 4:4:4 / 4:2:2 video in most
popular HD/2K/3G formats, including 1080p24 and 1080p50/60, with up
to 16-channels of embedded audio and timecode. Gemini has slots for
two removable 1.8” solid-state drives (SSDs), enabling recording in
either parallel mode (instant backup), or spanning mode (longer
record times). Sporting a lightweight milled aluminum case, Gemini
is about the same size and weight as the popular SmallHD DP6
monitor, but includes Recording, Playback, Image Processing, Dual
HD/3G SDI I/Os, HDMI-Out and consumer level audio I/O; while
consuming only 8 to 15 watts of power.
Gemini features S-Log support, with user programmable viewing LUTs,
which can be enabled selectively for either HD-SDI output. Flexible
recording options, include simultaneously recording native S-Log
video to one SSD (for on-line), and the same footage with burned-in
LUTs to the second SSD (for faster creation of off-line proxies
and/or H.264 video for mobile devices/internet).
A 3D/Stereo (extra-cost) option will also be available, enabling
dual-stream recording and playback in a single Gemini unit; creating
the world’s smallest, lowest-power, 3D recorder available anywhere.
Gemini will record independent left/right channel files, while
providing full synchronized playback of two streams as well as
side-by-side, 50/50 composite, or anaglyph combinations. Gemini can
uniquely output 3D in multiple formats simultaneously (ie
side-by-side and 50/50 composite), to aid in camera alignment and
monitoring.
Planned future enhancements, include reference image overlay (aka
onion-skinning). Users can capture still frames or create their own
reference images (custom grid overlays, for example) to mix with
live video, using an opacity slider. This feature will enable
directors to check the current on-set environment against a previous
day’s production, assisting in camera setup and easily identifying
anything out of place.
Convergent plans to support all major NLE programs, including Avid,
Final Cut Pro, Premiere, Vegas and Edius. Editors have the option to
edit in full-uncompressed (transfer time off the SSD to a fast HDD
is about 1/3 realtime) or use any of the popular CODECs (ProRes,
DNxHD, Cineform, etc). For example, using a modern multi-core
processor MAC, the transfer from the SSD and software encode to
ProRes, occurs in about ½ realtime (60 minutes of video requires a
total of 30 minutes to transfer and encode).
The Gemini 4:4:4 Kit, which includes the recorder, 1.8” SSD to eSATA
transfer station, AC power supply and cables, housed in a
custom-fitted hard plastic case

Attention: important reminder |
Gemini 4:4:4
Recorder and power requirements
Supplying adequate power to the Gemini 4:4:4 is
extremely important in achieving a successful
experience. Insufficient power, especially
during recording, can lead to undesirable
consequences including SSD damage or complete
failure.
When considering a power source, please remember
that the power source must be capable of
supplying enough Wattage (Voltage x Amperage) in
the worst case (most power hungry) scenarios,
which in the case of the Gemini 4:4:4 is during
recording (and especially when recording to both
SSD's simultaneously). SSD power requirements
rise substantially during writing to the SSD’s.
The highest power that the Gemini 4:4:4 ever
needs is around 24 Watts and this will only be
for a very short while. However, the power
source must be capable of providing 24 Watts at
all times.
So for example with a 12-Volt power supply, the
minimum amperage required to power the Gemini
Recorder is 2.0 Amps.
It is recommended to use a dedicated power
source for the Gemini Recorder. However, if a
power source is shared between the Gemini 4:4:4
and other devices such as a camera or monitor,
please ensure that the power source can always
withstand the power demands of the various
devices at their combined maximum needs.
If the Gemini Recorder is being powered from an
ARRI ALEXA, always use the RS output (3-Pin
Fischer/Lemo) from the camera with the
Convergent Design provided DC to DC converter
(included as part of the ARRI RAW upgrade
package with the Gemini 4:4:4, or otherwise
available from Convergent Design).
NEVER, under any circumstances, use the 12-Volt
output, (2-Pin Fischer/Lemo) from the ALEXA to
power the Gemini Recorder.
The 12 Volt output of the ALEXA does not provide
adequate power, and thus may cause serious
damage to the SSD’s.
Regarding transfer of video data from the SSD to
a computer:
It is vital to use only an AC-powered transfer
station, as provided by Convergent Design.
An AC-powered ESATA Transfer Station and an
AC-powered Universal Transfer Station are
available from Convergent Design. The Universal
Transfer Station comes with a USB 3.0 adapter
and Thunderbolt and Firewire 800 Seagate GoFlex
adapters are available for other sources.
Never use a USB-powered transfer station,
USB-powered transfer stations do not provide
reliable power for the power needs of the SSD's.

ARRIRAW Option for Gemini 4:4:4 |
ARRIRAW Option
ARRIRAW support is available to the
Gemini 4:4:4 Recorder as a paid upgrade to the unit. The upgrade is
a FIRMWARE upgrade only, with no new hardware or new SSD media
required.
Certified Quality
Gemini 4:4:4 is an ARRI Certified recorder. Therefore, the quality
of .ari file you get from Gemini is exactly the same as the quality
from any other ARRI Certified recorder. Gemini 4:4:4 also records
uncompressed RGB 444 up to 60fps (DPX), and soon will capture DNxHD
as well.
16:9 and 4:3 Support
While current production firmware (1.1.2) supports only 16:9,
Convergent Design has announced support for 4:3 as well. This is
included in the ARRIRAW Upgrade, and as a free firmware update for
current users.
60 Frames/Sec
ARRIRAW Option for Gemini 4:4:4 records ARRIRAW in all frame rates
up to 60p. Please note that this is the highest frame rates Gemini
can capture from Alexa, as it records 120fps internally only.
Demo Mode
ARRIRAW is available to ALL Gemini 4:4:4 users (firmware v1.1.2 or
greater) in demo mode. From the menu simply turn RAW to 'On'! Images
and preview will produce a grey bar for watermarking. This lets you
test with the files and workflow, and upgrade when your ready!
Full Raster Debayer
Unique to competing products, Gemini 4:4:4 has a 5" LCD hi-bright
monitor. In ARRIRAW you see a full raster (1920 x 1080) debayered
image, with or without LUT applied.
Save Money
Less than 25% the cost of competitive products, literally saving you
thousands of dollars. You can pay more for ARRIRAW recording, but
you won't get any better quality or reliability!
No New Media or Hardware
When you upgrade your Gemini 4:4:4, it is only a firmware update
that can be done anywhere once you have obtained your Activation
Key. Also, there is no new media necessary for high data rate
capture or likewise. Convergent Design SSD's work in all Gemini
Series products.
MEGA Metadata
All Metadata from ALEXA is sent over and captured on EVERY file. An
.XML file is created additionally, for importing Metadata into your
NLE. Coming soon: Full List of Metadata.
Easy Transfer
Smaller than a pack of cigarettes, the
Universal Transfer Station easily snaps into the Seagate GoFlex
Adapter of your choice, allowing for fast transfer via Thunderbolt,
Firewire 800 and USB 3.0. The first generation Transfer Station
provides eSATA transfer.
